Beta 1.8 Release
Posted on April 7th, 2009 2 commentsCouple of nice new features in this release include:
- paging between items/collectors on the Explore page – making it easier to browse to older content
- ability to edit tags directly on item pages (just click on the tags to edit them)
We have also begun to implement what we’re calling Community templates. Right now, the only “Community” templates that are available are ones that we have created for you. But in the near future, any collector will be able to publish templates that they have created for others to use.
Speaking of templates, in this release we have also added
- field reordering
- private fields (fields visible only to the owner of the item)
- multi-line text fields
- ability to add field hints (in case you forget what a field is for)
Have a look and let us know what you think.

Hi there. Have surfed around a bit and am wondering the point behind setting up Collectish. Is it to build community, get access to collections, help smaller institutions for example?
Where do you see this site fitting with CAN?
Thanks,
Lynda Kelly,

Hi Lynda. So, what you’re wanting to know is “why would a Museum set up a platform for private collectors” yeah?
Is a fair question. There are several aspects to this, and I should really devote an entire post to answering it properly.
Museum Victoria have developed Collectish because we wanted to try something a little different. Rather than focus purely on our own authoritative content, we decided to use our understanding of collections, and the way people like to engage with them, to produce a website with content that is not our own. We reckon we can learn a great deal from this process, and have fun at the same time.
> Is it to build community?
Certainly!
> To get access to collections?
It’s not intended to assist Museum Victoria specifically to access collections if that’s what you mean. We want to expose private collections to everyone.
> help smaller institutions for example?
At the moment, we’re focused on developing a great tool for private collectors, and anyone interested in exploring them. That said, lets just say that we’re aware of the further potential.

At the moment, CAN and Collectish serve very different interests, but hopefully there will be opportunities to explore possible synergy in future. As Collectish is intended to be a global entity, there will be lots of other networks we can hook up with as well.
Thanks
Forbes Hawkins,
Museum Victoria
